Harlequin MultiRIP

The Harlequin RIP® continues to outpace other RIP technologies by delivering exceptionally highperformance to process today’s print jobs across a wide range of devices and workflows. It’s compliant with industry standards and compatible with PDF creation tools.

gDoc Platform
The rich feature set in the Harlequin RIP means that OEMs and system integrators can build a wide variety of solutions.

It’s also extremely flexible: OEMs and ISVs can deploy the Harlequin RIP purely as a RIP and rebrand it with their GUI, or, they can deploy it as a near turn-key solution, taking advantage of workflow options that include in-RIP trapping, screening, proofing, color management, imposition and font emulation. There are specially developed OEM developer tools and a selection of plugins.

Harlequin MultiRIP 10 was introduced in August 2013 and Global Graphics continues to invest significant resources in the development of this technology.

Performance

Print runs are getting shorter, and a growing proportion of jobs are being printed digitally. As a result the demand for throughput in prepress is continuing to rise. The Harlequin RIP has had a reputation for meeting that demand for speed ever since it was first launched. The Harlequin MultiRIP continues to demonstrate a commitment to deliver ever faster systems, which is why it's the technology chosen by the leading vendors of commercial print and newsprint systems, as well as for commercial and other print sectors.

No need to flatten transparency

native processing of XPS, PDF and PostScript

The Harlequin RIP has processed PostScript files natively since 1988 and PDF files natively since 1997, including rendering of live PDF transparency since 2002. It also processes XPS, the print and document format from Microsoft natively (for full list, see Features).

Compatibility and compliance

Global Graphics has been active in its support for technical standards over the years but appreciates there is a balance to be struck between compliance with specifications and compatibility with real-world print jobs. Our RIP technology reflects this pragmatic approach: it is compliant with industry standards (see Features) as well as being compatible with the wide variety of tools making PDF in the field.

PostScript and PDF in one RIP

Your customers need the ability to handle mixed workflows and a RIP that can process PostScript and PDF natively in one engine will be faster and more efficient. One RIP interface that handles multiple file formats is easier for you as an OEM to integrate and you have just one set of color management, screening, imposition etc. to understand, and , if required, connect to. With only one RIP interface to learn there is less of a training overhead for your customers with the assurance that they will achieve consistency of output. The Harlequin RIP has processed PostScript® files natively since 1988 and PDF files natively since 1997, including rendering of live PDF transparency since 2002. It also processes XPS, the Microsoft print and document format, natively. (For full list see Features).

Sensible price point

Since its introduction into a production system in 1988 Global Graphics’ Harlequin RIP has earned a reputation for performance, quality and reliability at a sensible price point.

Flexible licensing for your customers

Market conditions over the past few years have put increasing pressure on print companies and many wish to spread the cost of new equipment across a longer period of time. Included in HarlequinMulti RIP10 is technology to support you to lease a RIP as part of a complete solution or even sell it on instalment plans.

One RIP to drive many devices

Drive your pre-press and printing equipment using one RIP that is simple for your customers to use. They will benefit from working in one common operating environment and will achieve consistency of output across plate-making, CtP, proofing devices, digital presses and inkjet printers including including hybrid workflows.

In-RIP workflow

The rich feature set in the Harlequin RIP means that OEMs and system integrators can build a wide variety of solutions, fine-tuned for specific use cases. Many processes can be handled within the RIP including trapping, screening, color management, proofing, imposition and font emulation.

What's new in MultiRIP?

Harlequin Parallel Pages™

interpreting and rendering in parallel

Harlequin Parallel Pages allows the RIP to process one page while it’s still rendering the previous one. It greatly extends multi-threading support, allowing maximum use to be made of both workstation and server-grade multi-core CPUs.

Harlequin RIPs have supported various forms of parallel processing for many years, and Harlequin MultiRIP 10 takes another big step in multi-threading with the addition of Harlequin Parallel Pages.

One processing thread can interpret one page of a job on one CPU core while multiple additional threads are still compositing transparency and the RIP:

  • to be used to drive light production and medium volume devices at higher page rates
  • in conventional print environments higher performance can cut the time required for a RIP and review cycle before committing expensive materials.

64-bit binary

Harlequin MultiRIP 10 is now available as a 64-bit RIP binary, increasing performance, and allowing access to more RAM so that even the most complex jobs, rendered at the highest resolutions, can run at full speed.

Extended color management

SetGold

The SetGold™ utility has been upgraded and extended to:
  • Drive the latest i1 Pro 2 colorimeter from x-rite
  • Drive supported x-rite devices on a 64-bit platform
  • Provide optimal color in situations where paper white is not the highest luminance patch (some devices yield a higher luminance with some yellow patches, for instance)

Push calibration procset

The push calibration procset added in Harlequin Server RIP 9 has been greatly extended. It now allows:
  • the delivery of measurement data rather than requiring pre-computed compensation numbers
  • updating existing calibration sets
  • use measurement data in a variety of measurement systems, including Status-T, DIN, etc.

PANTONE Plus extensions.

Harlequin VariData™

Harlequin VariData greatly accelerates the processing time of regular PDF files containing variable data including, but not only, PDF/VT files.

Harlequin VariData intelligently recognizes variable data and static backgrounds in personalized print, direct mail and transpromo jobs. It’s become more common for VDP jobs to include complex constructs such as:

  • flexing page layouts;
  • more permutations of shared images selected based on a recipient’s address, previous buying patterns etc;
  • live PDF transparency; or
  • images applicable to only one instance of the printed piece; or
  • variable vector graphics such as financial pie-charts and QR codes.

Harlequin VariData enables jobs using all of these advanced features to be greatly accelerated.

It supports an external mode (where rasters are managed and merged post-RIP using vendor-supplied technology), and an internal mode (providing an easy entry for digital press vendors into VDP optimization by caching and merging all rasters within the RIP itself).
